Ludhiana, February 11

One of the newest Assembly constituencies of Ludhiana, Atam Nagar has become a hot seat ahead of the Assembly elections.

A heated scuffle, vandalization, verbal spats were witnessed between the supporters of Simarjit Singh Bains’ Lok Insaf Party supporters and Congress’ Kamaljit Singh Karwal’s supporters near Daba Road on Monday. After the incident, the Atam Nagar assembly constituency is in everyone’s eye.

Old friends are rivals now

There was a time when Simarjit Singh Bains and Kamjit Singh Karwal were very good friends. In the year 2012, Kamajit Singh Karwal supported Siimarjit Singh Bains and then he won the elections. Later, because of some disputes, both of them parted ways and Karwal joined Indian National Congress.

Congress gave the MLA ticket to Kamajit Singh Karwal against Bains. However, he lost the elections with a margin of more than 28,000 votes. This time, it is not one against one, but a multi-cornered battle in Atam Nagar.

Other rivals of Bains

Other than Congress’ Kamaljit Singh Karwal, Shiromani Akali Dal’s Harish Rai Dhanda is also contesting the elections against Simarjit Singh Bains. Aam Aadmi Party has fielded Kulwant Singh Sidhu (a former member of Congres). Prem Mittal is representing BJP-PLC in Atam Nagar constituency. Therefore, a multi-cornered battle will be witnessed in the Atam Nagar constituency.

Atam Nagar- A sensitive constituency

Atam Nagar is one of the most sensitive Assembly constituencies of Ludhiana. Several cases of violence have been witnessed in Atam Nagar near the elections. There are 170 polling stations in the Atam Nagar constituency and 83 out of them are in sensitive areas.

Deputy Commissioner of Ludhiana Varinder Kumar Sharma and Commissioner of Police Gurpreet Singh Bhullar has already said that paramilitary forces will be deployed in such areas.
