The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the proposal to change the minimum age for women to get married from 18 to 21.

Last year, during his speech on Independence Day, the Prime Minister had mentioned the proposal.

He had said, “To save the daughters from malnutrition, it is necessary that they are married at the right age.”

Currently, the minimum age for women to get married is 18 and for men, it is 21. The government may make some changes to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, and the Hindu Marriage Act.

The recommendations on the proposal were submitted in December. According to the reports, the task force stressed that a woman must be at least 21 years old at the time of the first pregnancy.
