On Saturday, a youth in his 20s was beaten to death in the Golden Temple as he was accused of a sacrilege attempt. The devotees and the staff of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee caught the man as he was allegedly trying to attempt a sacrilege.
Later, his body was placed outside the SGPC headquarters, the video of which has gone viral on social media.
During the evening prayers, the accused man jumped over the safety grills inside the gurudwara and reached the place where Sri Guru Granth Sahib is placed. Suddenly, he picked up the sword kept in front of the holy book.
However, the sevadars at the gurudwara immediately apprehended him and he was then reportedly beaten to death by them and the Sangat.
Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has condemned the incident and has directed the Punjab Police to thoroughly probe the incident.
The incident took place around 5:50 pm on Saturday. A private channel telecast the evening prayers. Therefore, the incident was immediately captured. Later, the SGPC released the CCTV footage of the incident.
As per the reports, the accused man was first questioned inside a room, and then he was brought outside in a wheelchair. Meanwhile, he was beaten. He was not carrying any identity card and later, SGPC placed his body outside the headquarters.
The reports also suggest that it was the second attempt of sacrilege in the last four days. On Wednesday, a person reportedly threw the Gutka Sahib into the Sarovar.
SGPC Chief Harjinder Singh Dhami reportedly said, “It is a conspiracy to provoke the sentiments of the Sikhs and vitiate the atmosphere of Punjab.”
