Ludhiana, April 7
A class 10 girl from Ludhiana’s Dugri area committed suicide on April 4 as she was upset with her low score in pre-board exams. Harneet Kaur, a resident of the Dugri area committed suicide. Her last rites were conducted today in Ludhiana and her paternal uncle made several revelations.
He said that Harneet wanted to pursue medical stream as she dreamt of being a doctor. However, the school was going to give seats on the basis of the pre-board marks, in which she scored less.
He said, “Some of Harneet’s friends told me that the school was going to provide the seats of the medical stream on the basis of the score of the pre-board exams. She had said that she did not perform well in the pre-board exam and was upset because of that.”
“However, she did not reveal anything. Her friends also told me that she looked fine and there were no signs that she would take such a step. The whole family is shocked and we can not believe what just happened to us,” the deceased’s uncle added.
He also said that a shift from the online to offline mode of exams might also be the reason for her death. “Till December, she had studied online. Now, she had to give offline exams. The only thing that stressed her that she could not score well in pre-boards. She feared that she may not get a seat in the medical stream.”
BCM School Principal Dr. Paramjeet Kaur had said that there are appropriate arrangements in the school to take care of the mental health of the children in the school. She also termed the incident as “shocking”.
