The Centre government had issued an order to increase the jurisdiction of the BSF (Border Security Force) and given the officers, the power of arrest, search and seizure to the extent of 50 km from the borders inside the border states.
In simple words, BSF would look after the area up to 50 km inside the border state. These orders are for bordering states of Punjab, West Bengal, Assam and Tripura.
Earlier, the range was 15 kilometres in Punjab. Now, it has been increased. Other than that, in Gujarat, the area under BSF’s control was up to 80 kilometres. However, now, it has been reduced to 50 km to maintain uniformity. In Rajasthan, no change has been made and BSF will continue to control the area up to 50 kilometres.
The BSF will now be able to search and arrest in Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Manipur and Ladakh. According to the reports, no boundaries have been set in Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura and Manipur. Other than these five states, no boundary has been set in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh as well.
The Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has condemned the Centre Government’s decision. He took to Twitter and wrote
