The Facebook-owned messaging platform WhatsApp has reportedly banned over 5 million Indian accounts in less than three months. In its compliance report, the company reportedly said that it had received 420 grievance reports in August and banned as many as 20,70,000 accounts.

From June 16 to July 31, WhatsApp received 594 grievance reports and over three million accounts were banned. The company had earlier said that over 95 percent of the bans were due to unauthorized use of bulk messaging or spam.

The media reports suggest that on average, WhatsApp bans around 8 million accounts globally to prevent abuse on its platform.
